When Ms. Jasien, Newark High School's band director, was asked about some of the preparations and challenges for the trip and practicing the music, she responded with, "We have been preparing for the concert in Disney officially in class since January, but students have actually had one of the pieces since the beginning of the school year! We have worked very hard in the band every day, so that we feel confident and comfortable performing at Disney. I have assigned playing tests, brought Ms. Chase in to work with the band, and been very detail-oriented when rehearsing these pieces. This will not be our first performance of this concert program, however. We had a preview concert on Monday, March 13th, and the students played amazingly -- I am so proud of them. Since then, we have been making final touches on the music and doing plenty of run-throughs in class. I am confident it will be a great performance!"
Junior, Danica Peshia, states that out of the three songs they are playing, her favorite is, "The 550 second because Maxine plays the snare drum really well in that one." Going to Disney World provides many opportunities for the students and directors. Freshman, Jacob Seyller, states, "Some things I want to check off my bucket list would be playing for our band concert because playing at Disney is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." Ms. Jasien says what she is looking forward to most is, "to be in one of my favorite places and get to experience that with my students! I feel so lucky to have this opportunity as a first-year teacher. I am also looking forward to the performance -- what an amazing opportunity for the Newark Band to get to play at such a large venue for a huge audience!" Along with the performance, students have been packing their suitcases and bags for the long bus ride to Florida. Freshman Jacob Seyller shares how his preparation and packing are going so far. "The preparation for Disney is going pretty well because I am seeing if I have enough of everything. I am nowhere close to being packed for Disney; I haven't gotten started." The drive to Disney will take about 20 hours from start to finish, so they have to make sure they have plenty of entertainment to keep their minds busy. Junior Danica Peshia explains her entertainment rundown for the drive. "I am borrowing some books from Greta to read, planning on catching up on homework and watching TV or Netflix and eating snacks." |
